As have many, I eagerly awaited the new season of Arrested Developement. I have watched up to episode 12 or 13 and then started over -- I wanted to savor the final moments at a later date. Pretty much in line with how I watch TV these days anyhow.
Today, I read a couple of reviews by "critics" (seriously, that's gotta be one of the most bullshit things to get paid for, amirite)? I was quite surprised. Are people really this lukewarm on it?
When they announced it a while back, I fully was prepared for a steaming pile of shit. However, I decided that even if the new ones are terrible, it doesn't ruin the originals. And we come out ahead no matter what; even if they suck we got more than we had. I then heard about the filming style, that due to being unable to secure all the actors all the time they would each have an episode. I expected this to be even more fertile grounds for a shitstorm, but I remained resolved in my original opinion going in.
What we got was a well produced, funny, and true to the original show.
There's plenty of room for this project to go horribly, horrifically wrong, especially due to the situation with the actors. It didn't. It really works. The show has it's shitty moments, especially when it seems fairly obvious a character is talking to a bluescreen, but they did a really good job covering this up for the most part. There are times when the dialog just doesn't have that "snap" because the characters aren't playing off each other. I realize this. But it's really good, far better than I expected. To make up for the deficiencies, they added new characters, some of whom are excellent. I am thinking of Debrie and Lucile 2's brother.
Overall, they did an excellent job given the circumstances. Outstanding even.
We (the fans of the show) were given an opportunity that rarely if ever comes along in the entertainment industry, to have a abruptly cancelled yet excellent show revived, and everyone acts like entitled children. So, about what I expect these days.
